Fibers.org has published an overview of Ignis Photonyx, a maker of planar lightwave circuits for FTTH and long-haul markets. Here’s the part that got my attention: Ignis … reported revenues of NOK167 m (€21 m) in the first quarter of 2007, an increase of more than €18 m on the same period last year. Palo Alto Online reports that a partner in Palo Alto’s broadband efforts has acquired an unsuccesful bidder for the project: PacketFront is a partner of 180 Connect, which was selected by the City Council in January to work with the city to investigate developing a fiber network. DynamicCity also submitted a bid for the project, but its submittal was deemed "non-responsive" because it would have the city bear all the financial risk with the approximately $41 million project.

This BBC article profiles broadband access in Paris and gives information on the 100 Mbps FTTH network being built. That, and the fact that many Parisians live in apartment blocks, means that the cost of installing the new network is not quite as high as it would be in London. Norwegian network operator and service provider Lyse Telecom offers a plan to its customers where they lay the last segment of the FTTH connection themselves in return for a savings in the installation fee: To keep costs down, subscribers can lay the last part of the network themselves. Although the economics can vary based on deployment densities, costs for installing BrightPath are within 20 percent of HFC new-builds, and about 50 percent better compared to the current PON-based scheme used by Verizon Communications Inc.
