Posted on 06.20.07

In a Reuters UK article detailing AT&T’s U-Verse plans was this bit:

Analysts have said installation technicians are in short supply, with Verizon also hiring as it builds out its network.

Telus’ Plans for FTTH
Posted on 06.18.07

Telus, Canada’s second-largest telecommunications company has published its FTTH plans in its annual report:

In 2007, TELUS expects to continue field trials of fibre to the home (FTTH) technologies utilizing standards-based gigabit passive optical network (GPON) technology. FTTH is one of several competing proposed FTTx standards (where x stands for home, curb, pedestal or neighbourhood) in development that TELUS is actively monitoring. Fibre to the curb (FTTC) with an Ethernet connection to the premises, which facilitates sustained transfers of up to 100 Mbps and peak transfers up to one gigabit per second (Gbps), may be a more practical technology to deploy in new green field neighbourhoods or multiple dwelling units than the current copper loops. In addition, TELUS is exploring business models for the economical deployment of fibre-based technologies in areas currently connected by copper.

In an EETimes.com article about a new dual-core PON chip from Broadlight, is this piece of information:

Director of marketing Dan Parsons said the gigabit PON market is splitting into two distinct segments. When the carrier puts network termination on the side of the house, the termination chip should be a simple transceiver device. But when it is embedded in a residential gateway, end users want a single system-on-chip to perform security, Wi-Fi access point, router and firewall duties.

This information was provided by a reader. On May 25, this post was published:

PacketFront has signed a contract with Norway’s largest power utility company, Hafslund, to build an open access FTTH network in Østlandet, the area in and around Oslo.

Turns out that this is a big deal since:

1. In population terms Ostlandet covers about 50% of all of 4.6 million inhabitants. And apparantly those > 2 million people all will get open FttH

2. Hafslund is an energy corp  listed on the Oslo stock exchange. 53.72% of the shares is owned by one the Muinicipality of Oslo. http://www.hafslund.no/files/File/engelsk/aksjonrer/aksjonerer_eng_may_07.pdf
