France Telecom RFP for GPON

Light Reading reports that France Telecom has a request for proposals out for GPON access equipment. Alcatel Lucent stands as the favorite to win this business with ECI Telecom, Ericsson, and Sagem SA also in the running.

FT is "planning to spend €270 million (US$351 million) on a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) buildout during the next two years."

MRV to Acquire Fiberxon

MRV COMMUNICATIONS, has announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Fiberxon, Inc., a  supplier of transceivers for Metro, Access, and PON applications. The consideration from MRV to Fiberxon shareholders is approximately $131 million in a combination of cash and stock. Following the closing of the transaction, MRV intends on combining Fiberxon with Luminent, its wholly-owned subsidiary.

Dongwon and Teknovus Win Korea Telecom GEPON FTTH Contract

Dongwon, a supplier of optical communications equipment in Korea and Teknovus, a provider of Gigabit Ethernet Optical Network (G-EPON) chipsets for deployment of triple-play services in broadband access networks, have announced that Korea Telecom (KT) has selected the Dongwon Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) solution, based on Teknovus’ chips, for a "major" deployment throughout Korea.

Rural Minnesota Communities Face Financial Gap for Fiber Plan

A study performed by the Dynamic Cities consultancy has concluded that group of 14 northern Minnesota communities would not be able to achieve profitability if they were to build a municipal FTTH network.

British Telecom Rules out FTTH for the Time Being

Telecommunications Online has this quote from Paul Reynolds, CEO of BT Wholesale at the 2006 DigWorld Conference:

“I really don’t see a business case for widespread FTTH. It is not immediately apparent where the incremental revenue would come from that investment.”

Europe FTTH Statstics

informationpolitics recently posted some European FTTH statistics that Hartwig Tauber of the Europe FTTH Council presented at a recent conference:

(i) only 4 European countries (Denmark, Sweden, Italy and the Netherlands) have any real fibre to the home deployments; (ii) rates of current and planned FTTH deployments in Asia and North America are much higher than in Europe; and (iii) most — 2/3rds — of European FTTH deployments are municipal or utility-driven.

FTTH in Japan Driven by Voice Quality and Prices

According to Hiro-Michi Shinohara was speaking for Japanese carrier NTT on FTTH uptake in Japan : “It’s not so much applications but prices that are driving growth,” he said, “as well as high quality voice.”

NTT packages its FTTH data and voice package only marginally higher than its ADSL-based package — €43 per month for 100Mbps, which includes €3 for the ‘Hikari-denwa’ optical telephone service, which comprises two lines and five telephone numbers (geographically assigned). The ADSL package is €37 per month.

FTTH Subscriber Numbers Increased by 88% in 2005

"The number of subscribers to FTTH (Fiber To The Home) services in Japan increased 88% in 2005, reaching 5.4 million at the end of March, 2006 contributing to steady growth of optical access network systems market of 76.2 billion Yen (approx. 645 million US dollars) in terms of sales in 2005," as revealed in a report published by Yano Research Institute a marketing research firm in Japan.

PMC-Sierra CTO Gives Interview on Passave Acquisition

In March 2006, chipmaker PMC-Sierra acquired Israeli startup Passave, a developer of EPON chips and a vendor to the largest Japanese PON equipment makers. In this article, Robert Yung, the CTO of Passave, gives an interview that is mainly focused on the Passave acquisition. Here’s a quote:

In the past two years, I’ve seen 400 technology start-ups in the US and China. Passave was special. In addition, the number of companies that have working products in the field can be counted on the fingers of one hand. There are a few dozen companies in the development stage.

Fi-ra Photnics Receives Order for FTTH Optical Splitters from Samsung

Fi-ra Photonics Co. Ltd, 50.1% owned subsidiary of Ignis ASA, has received a USD 1.2 million order for delivery of optical splitters to Samsung in Korea. The splitters will be used in Korea Telecom’s roll-out of a passive optical network (PON).

FTTH in the Exploratory Stage for the Dutch City Arnhem

This brief article (in Dutch) states that the company GNEM is considering building a Euro 75 million FTTH network in the Dutch city of Arnhem to serve 66,000 subscribers. A cost feasibility study will be done first.

Mexican Resort Chooses Alloptic GEPON

Alloptic has announced that El Tamarindo Resort and Spa has deployed the Alloptic GEPON FTTH solution. El Tamarindo is using the Alloptic solution to  provide voice, data, video, building automation and security services throughout the resort.

USDA Rural Development’s Broadband Access Funding Used for FTTH Installation

McClure Telephone Company in Henry County, Ohio USA will use $6.167 million in funding from the USDA Rural Development’s Broadband Access and Telecommunications Program to build an FTTP network providing service to 245 data, 808 voice and 256 video subscribers.

French Industry Ministry Aims for 4M FTTH Connections by 2012

French Minister for Industry François Loos has announced that he wants service providers to provision 4M FTTH Connections by 2012.

Loos will have little difficulty persuading French telecommunications operators to help him reach his goal. France Télécom’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Didier Lombard was next on stage. He said of the minister’s target, "I think we will do better than that."

Tennesse Telco Ben Lomand Chooses Occam for Triple Play and Active Ethernet FTTH

Occam Networks has announced that Ben Lomand Telephone Co-op, Inc., one of Tennessee’s largest independent operating companies (IOCs), has selected Occam Networks to provide Triple Play services to its customers. Ben Lomand will also soon trial Occam’s BLC 6312 blade as part of a project to offer Active Ethernet fiber to the home.

According to Top FTTH Lawyer, Muni Broadband is Gaining Ground

According to Jim Baller, widely considered the top municipal broadband legal advocate, the regulatory environmnent is beginning to look more positive for municipal broadband. Verizon and AT&T are taking a less combative approach and legal cases have been won recently. Also, "According to Render Vanderslice & Associates, municipalities and utilities serve 7% of the fiber-to-the-premises subscribers in North America today."

TXP Corporation to Acquire Siemens ONT Technology

TXP Corporation has announced that it has signed a Letter of Intent with Siemens  to acquire the assets and intellectual property for its Optical Network Terminal (ONT) technology, supporting both Broadband Passive Optical Network (BPON) and Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) standards.
