Following Cisco’s acquisition of set-top box maker Scientific Atlanta, speculation has begun on Cisco’s acquisition strategy in the access space. Here’s a quote from an article in CertCities:

Nevertheless, Dunphy gives the acquisition a (mostly) unqualified thumbs-up. What’s more, he thinks Cisco might soon need to make a related acquisition. “[T]his was a smart move for Cisco. This may not be the end of acquisitions for Cisco, either, as it may need to acquire (if not partner) to gain a PON solution as the GPON market takes shape, and could use a relationship to gain access to DSLAMS as well, to round out the broadband access part of its solution.”

Does it make sense at this time for Cisco to acquire an independent GPON equipment maker (or even GEPON)? If so who?

  1. Do some research on Calix, who just acquired OSI, and do some research on who started Calix. This gentleman ties to Cisco through a past very successful acquistion and the fact that Cisco was an investor in OSI seems like a decent indication of where Cisco is shopping.
