The development 10 Gbps EPON, now officially known as next generation EPON (NGEPON), has been documented in a roadmap that was put forward by the Japanese carrier KDDI and the US-based chipmaker Teknovus. This announcement was also endorosed by the Ethernet Alliance so I presume its will be an industy-wide effort. The press release does not mention if a copy of the roadmap is publicly available or timeframes for the deployment. In addition some EPON deployment numbers were mentioned: Over one billion Ethernet ports have been shipped over the last two decades, and new ports are shipping at a rate of 230 million annually. Ethernet PON is on track to reach 50 million homes and businesses by the end of the decade. Teknovus alone has shipped more than two million EPON ports to more than thirty original equipment manufacturer designs worldwide for deployment by KDDI and many other progressive carriers.
